What is Myopia?



Myopia, also known as shortsightedness, is a very common condition where a person is unable to see distant things clearly. Myopia is quite commonly seen in youngsters/teenagers.


What does it mean to have Myopia?



Undiagnosed Myope (person who has blurred vision) also experiences symptoms like headaches or eyestrain when trying to focus on things far away.


How does it happen?



Myopia occurs when the eyeball becomes too long and focuses in front of the retina than on it. It may also be caused by an abnormal shape of the cornea or lens.


What are the main causes?



It is recommended that children should at least play for 45 minutes outdoors to reduce chances of developing myopia

How to slow down?

In Adults

Wearing correct prescription (eyeglasses and contact lenses).
Follow the 20-20-20 rule, which means every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds and remember to blink.
Option of refractive surgery do exist.

In youngsters/teenagers

Wearing correct prescription (eyeglasses).
Achieving the right balance of indoor and outdoor life
Use of specific types of progressive lenses
Medications (eye drops) for kids as part of Myopia control
