Caring For Your Soft Contact Lenses

Contact lens solutions play an increasingly critical part in the overall success of contact lens wear. Any contact lens, whether soft or rigid, must be cleaned and disinfected following removal from the eye, if it is to be worn again.

What contact lens solution should I use?

An understanding of contact lens solution properties and performance helps your Optometrist select a solution for you based on your lens type, material, replacement schedule and wearing modality.

Clear instructions on correct cleaning and disinfecting procedures along with continual assessment during aftercare is the key to good compliance. Contact lens solutions dispensed by us are designed to keep your lenses clean and fresh – helping your eyes stay healthy and your lenses feel comfortable. You'll need to use a cleaning solution if you have fortnightly, monthly or annual lenses.

During wear, contact lenses become contaminated by tear components such as proteins and lipids, tear debris such as desquamated epithelial cells or environmental pollutants, and in some cases eye make-up. Microbial contamination is also possible during handling and storage.

The easier a solution system is to use, the more likely the patient is to comply. All-in-One Multipurpose solutions that can be used for cleaning, rinsing, storage and disinfection are the most popular choice due to their simplicity of use.

Lens Care tips for comfortable wear

We're sure you love wearing your contact lenses, so here are some helpful reminders for you to continue wearing them comfortably and safely.

DO's
Wash, rinse, and dry hands before handling contact lenses.
Clean and disinfect your contacts before placing them back into the eye.
Put few drops of the multipurpose solution on your palm and rub them gently for about 20 seconds, after lens removal.
Remember to rinse your lenses with a jet of multipurpose solution before placing the lens into the lens case.
Store your lenses, fill each chamber of the lens case with fresh multipurpose solution, place them carefully in your contact lens case, close the lid and leave the lenses to soak until you reuse them again.
Make sure you are using the correct solution for your type of contact lens. Not all lenses and solutions are compatible.
Read and follow instructions on 'How to use' which comes along with the multipurpose solution.
Clean lens case every week. Ensure lens case is rinsed and air dried daily and changed frequently, ideally monthly.
Follow product recommendations and instructions from your Eye Care Professional to clean and disinfect your lenses properly.
Throw away your contact lenses & contact lens solution after the recommended usage period.
Visit your optometrist regularly for all the aftercare appointments.

DON'Ts
Wear your lenses if your eyes become red or sore – contact your Optometrist or eye care professional for advice.
Top up or reuse contact lens solution.
Use contact lens solution that is past its expiration or discard date.
Wear your lenses longer than the recommended duration.
Use tap water to store, clean or rinse your contact lenses or case.
Transfer contact lens solutions into smaller travel size containers. This can affect the sterility of the solution and lead to eye infections.
Shower in contact lenses and remove them before using a hot tub or swimming, unless wearing goggles.
Wear your contact lenses if you are using eye drops prescribed by your doctor.
Change your contact lens or multipurpose brand without consulting with your optometrist. Don't mix contact lens solutions together.
Hesitate to contact us if you have a problem.

Contact Lens Case Care

Clean your lens case as carefully as you clean your lenses. It is often neglected. You should rinse it at least every night with disinfecting solution. Wipe the case with a tissue and let it air dry to help get rid of lingering bacteria. Replace your case every month ideally.
